Remarkable Dyes in Quinoid Chemistry: From Small to Macrocyclic Zwitterions

Benzoquinone Diimines[1] are versatile building blocks to reach unconventional chromophores[2] and near-infrared macrocycles,[3] along with the exploration of 1966’s coupling principle in polymethine dyes.[4]
In this presentation, the synthesis and electronic features of (poly-)zwitterionic systems will be presented and rationalized. The remarkable properties and strong potential of these chromophores will be illustrated through utilizations in the fields of surface sciences, vapochromic probes[5] or photoacoustic imaging.[6]
