Tales from the Bonding Analysis
“From Main Group to the Super Heavy Elements Chemistry”

Diego M. Andrada

Institut für Allgemeine und Anorganische Chemie, Universität des Saarlandes, 66123 Saarbrücken, Germany

The current understanding of chemical bonding is strongly related to the electron-pair bonding model that was introduced by Gilbert Lewis more than a century ago. Nowadays, the focus relies on the difference between electron sharing bonds A-B and dative bonds A→B as distinctive features between non-metals and metals, respectively. However, there are many exotic molecules which present unusual bonding situation prompting animated debates on fundamental questions concerning the very definition of chemical bonding. In this context, theoretical studies played a crucial role through reinterpretation of the bonding situation and predicting possible new compounds. [1]

This lecture reports the recent theoretical work in the areas of group 14 low-valent main group compounds (EL2, E2L2 and E3L3, E = C-Pb and L = σ-donor ligands) and super heavy elements complexes MCH2+ (M = M = Fr - Ac, Rf - Og).
