The importance of visualization in science is testified by the efforts that many scientists employ in order to organize information (data, diagrams, plots etc.) in a visual way. For human beings it is perfectly natural to extract meanings from visual clues, and we do so often unconsciously.

In the fields of cellular and molecular biology, the use of 3D techniques to convey information is also intrinsically linked to the nature of the data: structural biology and the many new microscopy technologies all provide spatial information which is three dimensional in nature. However, only a subset of data can be extracted in 3D, whereas we could exploit the 3D environment in a much larger set of situations.

An important aspect, sometimes overlooked, is that visualization starts in our mind: we will explore the techniques and the promises of visualization with some direct experience, and show how this effort contributes to increasing our scientific understanding of cellular phenomena.
