Fréjus is a small town on the French mediterranean coast known as Côte d'Azur (French Riviera), located between St Tropez (40 km), Cannes (30 km) and Nice (60 km).

Goals

To further our understanding of composition, heterogeneity, and dynamics of Earth's mantle by consideration of the constraints imposed by various disciplines, and to promote an interdisciplinary exchange of research results. Important observational constraints are provided by seismology, through the characterization of seismic discontinuities and other structures in the mantle which may have significance for global dynamics and composition. Other constraints are imposed by geochemistry, high-pressure petrology; mineral physics, and geophysical fluid dynamics. The Fréjus2003 workshop is aimed at bringing together researchers from these different domains of geosciences in order to review the state of our understanding in these areas and to propose new approaches for obtaining a more comprehensive model of the mantle. This workshop is a sequel to the first "Phase Transition and Mantle Discontinuities" workshop organized at GeoForschung Zentrum in Potsdam in April 2001.

Schedule

The workshop starts on Wednesday (April 2nd) with a dinner and welcome party (around 8pm). The talks and poster sessions begin on Thursday morning (April 3rd) and continue till Saturday evening (April 5th). After breakfast on Sunday morning (April 6th), local transportation will be available for participants to Nice (site of the AGU/EGS/EUG meeting) before Sunday noon.

Scientific Program

Fréjus2003 workshop will be highly interdisciplinary. We want to bring roughly equal numbers of participants from seismology, mineral physics, geodynamics, and geochemistry, with no competing sessions. One aim is to have each discipline will tell the others what kind of data are needed to advance our understanding of the mantle. There will be poster sessions and a number of contributed talks as well.

Day-by-day program (subject to some minor changes)

List of invited talks (including abstracts)

List of participants (including abstract if submitted)

IMPORTANT - if you want to submit a new abstract or to modify the already submitted one contact Jan Matas (jan.matas@ens-lyon.fr) before March 21st. After this date NO modification can be accepted for the workshop booklet !

Local Transportation

Local transportation will be available from the Nice Int'l Aiport and from Fréjus-St. Raphaël Train Station. There will be several minivans to bring participants from those two places to the conference site La Villa Clythia.

The detailed schedule can be checked here. Please, check whether the arrival information (time and/or flight number) is correct. If missing or wrong, please contact: frejus2003.org@ens-lyon.fr.
