Potassium

T. Lambert, V. Herault, L. Corne

Known for centuries, potassium, the 19th element of the periodic table, is very often left behind on the scientific scene compared to its cousins sodium and lithium. However, its contribution in chemistry is not negligible, its applications in industry are numerous and its presence in the human body is essential. From its extraction as an ore to its purification, potassium production has been the subject of study and improvement over the past century. Many areas require a deep knowledge of potassium: dating, fertilizer production, medicine and food, electrochemical industry, etc. Element of the future, potassium seems to have a lot of surprises to reveal to the chemist.

Functionalizing mesoporous silica: from surface modification to new applications

L. Bridou, P. Dedieu, F. Gu, M. Leconte, N. Scaglione, V. Treil

This article rewiews the different ways of functionalizing mesoporous silica and the new surface properties that emerge. The grafting mechanism and its optimisation are also presented. In this study, we synthesized then functionalized by silylation SBA-3 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-3) type materials. We show that functionalizing the surface induces a decreasing of the porous volume and of the surface polarity by using several techniques: wettability tests, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, methylene blue test and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. Finally, the use of functionnalized mesoporous silica as a catalyst support and as a drug carrier are developped.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in one's bath

C. Demarez, G. Butseraen

This article presents results obtained during the pratical work called "Aharonov-Bohm effect in one's bath". We first remind the theoretical foundations needed to understand the subject. The analogy between the Aharonov-Bohm effect and hydrodynamics were then tested by observing experimentally the wave front dislocation meaning the apparition of the Berry's phase. Finally, to show this phase apparition more intuitively, we realized a Young's double slit experiment and we observed the impact of the Berry's phase on the interferential picture.

An Introduction to Deformation Quantization

M. Hibat Allah

Deformation quantization (quantum mechanics in phase space) is an interesting formulation of quantum mechanics as it provides a natural way to recover classical mechanics in the limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$, while such a limit is not rigorous in the scope of the correspondence principle. In addition, one can show that the predictions of deformation quantization and of the standard formulation of quantum mechanics are the same as we shall see in this article. Interestingly enough, this formulation also provides a very natural framework to encode the possible non-commutative behavior of space at the Planck scale where gravity and the laws of quantum mechanics are both expected to be applicable.

Electrodynamics of Pulsars

B. Crinquand

This article aims at describing the physics of pulsars. After figuring the nature of pulsars through observational data, emphasis is laid on the importance of pulsar magnetospheres in this problem. The question of pulsar energy loss is then tackled, by means of a few approximations.

Saturated Absorption Spectroscopy

David Dumont

Saturated absorption spectroscopy improves the resolution of the atomic transmission spectra by giving access to the hyperfine transitions and, contrary to classical spectroscopy, it is not limited to the fine structure. Furthermore, it overcomes the limit of Doppler-broadening of the transitions due to the kinetic motion of atoms. The method exploits two counter-propagating beams, a strong one to saturate the atoms of a vapour cell in order to reduce the absorption of a weak beam. This scheme is widely implemented to stabilise precisely the lasers frequency.

Monopôles magnétiques en théorie des champs

Camille Eloy
