Photoinduced electron transfer and luminescent metal complexes

I will begin with an introduction to electron transfer and will emphasize a few key studies that have led to the current understanding of this class of reactions. Gaps of knowledge and challenges for future research will be identified, and I will present a few recent studies from my own research group. This includes for example unusual distance dependences of electron transfer rates, light-induced transfers of multiple electrons, and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions. In the second part of the talk, I will first introduce some prototypical metal complexes made from precious metals and explain why they are luminescent. Then I will demonstrate how earth-abundant metal elements can be used to obtain emissive complexes, and I will highlight a few recent studies from our laboratory. Possible applications of these complexes in photoredox catalysis and other processes will be discussed.
