My thesis deals with Rayleigh-Benard convection in liquid helium and at room temperature. Specifically, I performed heat transfer and optical measurements in a room temperature Rayleigh-Benard cell using water and a fluorocarbon. The use of different fluids allowed to vary the ranges of parameters and in particular to reach high Rayleigh numbers of the order of 1012. In a second step, I developed a similar cold experiment by designing a cryogenic Rayleigh-Benard cell, allowing to perform optical measurements of the same type.
