Criticality of Dislocation Plasticity

The statistical physics question in plastic deformation of materials is what is yielding? Is the onset a phase transition, like jamming? The recent progress in this matter has lead to some surprises, as it appears that dislocation assemblies exhibit "extended criticality", in other words such systems exhibit always non-trivial avalanche statistics, even in the absence of external stresses, "at rest". In this talk I will review recent results that bring forth this idea, how you can complicate the phase diagram (by adding disorder) and what the open problems are.
