The carpel is the female reproductive organ, enclosing the ovules, in the flowering plants. The evolution of this organ was a major factor in the evolutionary success of the flowering plants, which diversified from a single common ancestor to form today around 400 000 species. In this project, we are attempting to better understand the mechanisms of development of the carpel and to identifiy the molecular changes which led to the evolution of this organ in the first flowering plants.
