In roses, scent is a highly desirable trait. Monoterpenes are the major scent compounds, representing 70% of the gragrance content in some varieties.

The Flower Morphogenesis group and collaborating partners used transcriptomic and genetic approaches to show that monoterpenes biosynthesis in roses differs from what is known in other plants and involves a specialized Nudix hydrolase protein localized in the cytoplasm of rose petal cells. Data recently published in Science.
