The history of poverty-deprivation, humanitarianism and charity work are the main research topics of Axelle Brodiez-Dolino. Having successfully obtained the French, highly competitive, teaching qualification known as the “agrégation” in history, this former pupil of the École Normale Supérieure of Fontenay-Saint-Cloud/Lyon completed a doctorate in contemporary history at the Université Paris 8 in 2004.
Recruited as a research officer at the Rhône-Alpes Historical Research Laboratory three years later, she studied the history of the French charitable associations, such as Emmaüs and le Secours populaire. The researcher also led a multi-disciplinary project on health and social vulnerability, co-financed by the National Research Agency along with the Research, Studies, & Evaluation Department and statistics from the Research Mission.
Since July 2017, she has worked at the Norbert Elias Centre in Marseille. Her most recent work focuses on the history of social protection and public policy in the twentieth century, in France and in the western world, studying homelessness and contemporary shifts in poverty. She was the author of the publication entitled “Combating poverty. Social and health vulnerability from 1880 to the present day” (CNRS Editions, 2013) which looks at contemporary issues of poverty in France. Axelle Brodiez-Dolino is also the Assistant Director of the journal “Le Mouvement social” (The Social Movement).
