The EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) and ENS de Lyon have partnered to offer their students a dual-diploma Master’s degree in Biology, Bio-Engineering and in Life Science and Technology.
This international training of a very high standard features an original combination of fundamental research and the latest top engineering.
It has a double curriculum over three years leading to 2 Master’s degrees:
- Master’s in Biology at ENS de Lyon / UCBL
- Master’s in Bio-Engineering or Master in Life Sciences and Technology from EPFL – A recognized degree by the French Commission of Engineering Degrees.

Curriculum
To obtain the Master’s degree from ENS de Lyon/UCBL within the framework of the double-diploma with EPFL, 120 ECTS credits of which 30 credits out of the 90 credits obtained have been validated at EPFL.
To obtain the Master’s degree from EPFL within the framework of the double-degree program with ENS de Lyon/UCBL: 120 ECTS credits of which 30 credits out of the 90 credits obtained have been validated at ENS de Lyon. An internship, according to the rules set out by EPFL, is compulsory.
Courses are taught in French and in English

Admission
Entry requirements
Admission conditions for EPFL students:
- Holders of a university first degree from EPFL with an overall average of at least 5/6
- To be enrolled in the 1st year of the Master’s degree in Bio-Engineering or Master’s degree of Life Science and Technology at the time of the application.
Admission conditions for ENS de Lyon Students:
- Having successfully completed the 3rd year of the Life Sciences degree, specialization in Biology (ENS de Lyon / UCBL)
- To be enrolled in the 1st year of the Master’s degree in Biology at ENS de Lyon / UCBL at the time of the application
Admission conditions for all applicants:
- To have an excellent average result on the degree course and to demonstrate solid knowledge in mathematics and physics.
- Level of language required: B2 in English and B2 in French.
Masters’ from EPFL: essentially taught in English.
Masters’ in Biology: taught in English and in French.
Application process
Procedure for EPFL students
- Students must fill in the EPFL Double Degree form and give it in to the EPFL mobility office within this time limit.
This selection does not guarantee the acceptance on the dual degree program at ENS de Lyon. - Students apply for the Master’s at ENS de Lyon according to the calendar and the following procedures:

- At the ENS de Lyon:
This selection does not guarantee the acceptance on the EPFL double degree course.- Interview with the educational team of Master’s in Biology for the approval of the application. Approval will be formalized by a recommendation letter to be included in the EPFL application.
- The student must inform the Director of the Biology Department of their application for validation in the study plan.

The cover letter is to be replaced by the file sent to the EPFL.
- At the EPFL:
- The student pre-selected by the person in charge of the Masters’ candidates will then apply for the Master’s course at EPFL according to the calendar and following procedures before January 15 and April 15:

Information on financial support
Students pay tuition fees for 3 years only in their home establishment.
- For EPFL Students
- Students can qualify for international mobility aid from the EPFL
- Students with a foreign nationality can apply for a Master's degree with an excellence award grant from ENS de Lyon and its partners
- For ENS de Lyon / UCBL Students
- Students can qualify for international mobility aid from the ENS de Lyon (private access)
- Students can apply for an excellence award grant scholarship from the EPFL
