Objectif du cours

Aim of the course: training through research

Topic: process of economic development in Eurasia since the 19th century

Approach : applied economic analysis based on results presented in scientific articles and books (no prerequisite)

10 themes (sessions 2 to 11)

1. Divergences and "strange parallels" in Eurasia before the 19th century?
2. Living conditions, capabilities and migrations in the 19th and 20th centuries
3. Industrialization, urbanization and development in the 20th century
4. The demographic and economic impact of wars in the 20th century
5. International trade since the end of the 19th century
6. Environmental conditions since the 1950s
7. Economic institutions since the 1950s
8. Foreign investments since the 1950s
9. Development aid since the 1950s
10. Regionalism since the 1950s

Suggested reading for the students who would need an introductory course in economics (basic concepts): 

Dasgupta P (2007). Economics, a very short introduction, Oxford University Press (available as Google Book).

Course in English with 11 sessions. The first session of one hour (on September 14, from 2 to 3pm) will be dedicated to a presentation of the course and the organisation of the following 10 sessions. Each of the following 10 sessions (2 to 11) will be organized in two parts (one theme per session): part one: overall presentation based on a PPT circulated in advance; part two: analysis of a scientific article by a group of students and discussion.

Dates of the 11 sessions: 14/09, 21/09, 28/09, 5/10, 12/10, 19/10, 2/11, 9/11, 16/11, 23/11, 30/12

Requirements: before each session: (1) read before each session the PPT of the session (circulated in advance) and of the previous one and ask questions if needed during the first part of the session (from session 2); (2) read the article to be presented by a group of students in the second part of the session (from session 2); and participate in the discussion

Assessment with 3 components: (1) oral presentation in English of an article from session 2 to session 10 by a group of students; PPT of your presentation and text of your presentation to be sent to your instructor as PDF 24h before the session (40%); (2) summary note in French of 800 words (2 pages) on one of the articles studied in session 2 to 6 (other than the article presented as part of component 1) to be sent before the session (30%); (3) same as component 2 in session 7 to 11 (30%).
