Non-Linear Hydrodynamic Waves : Wave Interaction and Wave Turbulence
Université Paris-Diderot, 19-20 septembre 2013

Aims

The objective of this meeting is to gather French research community working in the field of hydrodynamics waves. In numerous natural or experimental situations non-linear effects are important on propagation of hydrodynamic waves, producing interesting phenomena (pattern formation, instabilities, mixing, wave breaking ...). With recent advances both in numerical simulation of interfacial flows and in experimental measurement of evolving free surfaces, there is now the possibility to confront accurately observations and theoretical predictions.

The workshop will feature four one-hour talks for invited speakers and several contributed talks of 20 min (doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are welcome). Time will be reserved for discussions.

Among various open questions (pattern formation, wave flow interaction, solitons, rogue waves, wave breaking ...), this meeting will be dedicated mainly but not only on two subjects:

* Waves interactions. Due non-linear phenomena, waves can exchange energy between different wave numbers. Most common description of these exchanges relies on resonant interactions between triads or quartets. How can they be characterized in experimental situations ? Are these mechanisms valid when the degree of non-linearity is increased ?

* Wave turbulence. It consists in the study of the dynamical and statistical properties of a large ensemble of waves in non linear interaction. In the weakly non-linear case, it can be described analytically with the Weak Turbulence Theory. Nevertheless in most experimental situations, validity hypotheses are not fulfilled, implying a more complex phenomenon. What is the influence of non negligible dissipation acting at all scales (linear viscous damping or wave breaking) ? What are the consequences of coexistence between wave turbulence and coherent structures ?

Although this meeting will be more focused on free-surface hydrodynamics waves, interventions on neighboring subjects are gladly welcome, like:
 * Elastic waves on plates
 * Internal waves in stratified fluids
 * Inertial waves in rotating fluids
 * Alfven waves in magnetohydrodynamics
