Paleogenomics consists of studying the evolution of modern species by deciphering the genomes of their extinct founding ancestors, either through a synchronic approach (i.e., modeling the evolution of species by comparing their modern genomes) or an allochronic approach (i.e., by accessing ancient DNA from fossil remains). Paleogenomics allows for a better understanding of the forces that have contributed to the adaptation of species since their origins and during their domestication. Paleogenomics is also an important tool for identifying genes controlling common functions and traits between species. Applied to comparing population genetic diversity between species, paleogenomics now makes it possible to identify "omics" variants shared between species and involved in agronomic traits of interest ; this is known as inter-species translational research. Inter-species translational research for plant breeding proposes to leverage, in breeding programs today, on past genomic imprints established jointly between species over 10,000 years of domestication and selection, corresponding to factors of local adaptation to paleoenvironmental constraints. Thus, such genetic imprints (derived from synchronic and allochronic approaches) can open avenues for developing varieties adapted to current agricultural challenges through the exploitation of a currently underutilized source of diversity in breeding.
