Correlated bosons on a ring: emerging quantum features

Quantum many-body systems are challenging both theorists as well as experimentalists since more half a century, due to the exponentially large size of the underlying Hilbert space required to describe them. Furthermore, in low dimensions the effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations are enhanced, since the particles cannot avoid each other, and mean-field approaches usually fail. In this talk I will consider a system made of delta-interacting one-dimensional bosons at zero temperature, confined on a ring and subjected to an artificial gauge field. This model describes ultracold atoms in a tight ring-trap waveguide, subjected to a stirring barrier or to phase imprinting. For this system I will introduce the main theoretical approaches to describe the system at weak and strong interactions. I will then present some of our results on the persistent currents, in particular comparing the case of repulsive and attractive interactions, and on phase slips, which can be of thermal or quantum nature. These results could find application in quantum technologies, e.g. to quantum-enhanced rotation sensors.
