We are conducting various numerical studies of the von Kármán sodium experiment [Monchaux et al., PRL, 2007], which is one of only three experiments capable of generating a magnetic field from a turbulent flow of liquid sodium, using the SFEMaNS code [Nore et al., JFM 2018]. Our study focuses initially on the hydrodynamics of this setup: the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is used to analyse the most energetic modes of the velocity field over a wide range of Reynolds numbers [Bousquet et al., PoF, 2024]. We then carry out numerical simulations of magnetic field inversions in the Von Kármán Sodium experiment and derive a reduced-order model that will serve as a basis for future research into dynamo behaviour and symmetry breaking in turbulent flows.
