Bacterial colonization of surfaces is the first step in the formation of biofilms, microbial communities that are ubiquitous in natural, industrial, and clinical environments. At interfaces, bacteria are exposed to mechanical, hydrodynamic, and physicochemical cues that influence their behavior and collective organization. Understanding these interactions has been the central thread of my work, from the single-cell to the colony scale. Combining microfluidics, microscopy and controlled surfaces I aim to understand how forces exerted by and on bacteria depend on their environment, and translate into colony organization and morphogenesis. This work has progressively led me from describing surface colonization toward understanding—and ultimately controlling—the fate of surface-associated bacteria. My current projects extend these approaches to new bacterial species, investigate bacterial physiology during colonization and decontamination, and explore physical strategies for surface decontamination. Together, these research directions aim to develop a physical and quantitative description of the interactions between bacteria and their environment, and illustrate how concepts and tools from soft matter physics and biophysics can contribute to understanding, probing, and controlling bacterial populations at interfaces.
