In this thesis, we studied the emergent collective behaviors of metamachines composed of hundreds of interacting rotary micromotors. We demonstrate that these metamachines are capable of self-organizing their dynamics through purely local interactions between motors, without any preprogrammed instructions. First, we show that frictional interactions lead to the self-organization of rotation directions, giving rise to an antiferromagnetic order. In this ordered state, dipolar interactions spatially structure the phases, allowing the metamachine to reach a high level of coherence. Finally, we show that disorder in the motors’ precession frequencies disrupts this coherence, inducing the emergence of metachronal waves within the system.
