Active matter remains a growing research area where theory and experiments can fruitfully interact. Fueled by experimental active matter systems, there is a growing general interest to understand at a fundamental level how to treat active forces that drive physical systems far from equilibrium to understand emerging phase transitions and collective behaviours. In recent years, I have followed this trend for dense particle systems which can form jammed or glassy materials and can respond in surprising ways to active forces. I will motivate and then present some simple examples of active matter systems where activity leads to exciting nonequilibrium physics.
