Physics is generally seen as a neutral way of knowing the world, which must be dissociated from its potentially bad ‘applications’. The aim of this Colloquium is to question this idea by drawing on the history and philosophy of science, looking in particular at Galileo's invention of modern physics four centuries ago. This return to the origins of physics will give us a better understanding of the deep entanglement of our science with technology and the specific type of knowledge it produces.
