Extending our understanding of (non-interacting) Anderson localization to the interacting many-body case is notoriously difficult. Despite the extensive body of work and debates that have occurred over the past two decades, the question of many-body localization (MBL) remains partially unanswered. In this talk, I will introduce the MBL problem using simple disordered quantum spin models that capture the main ingredients necessary to address the key questions, in particular the subtle issue of thermalization. After reviewing several key milestones and results in this field, I will discuss our recent work, in which we discovered that rare events play a fundamental role in destabilizing MBL and restoring ergodicity.
