Magnetism and electricity are naturally coupled in Maxwell's equations. However, in solids, long-range magnetic and electric orders do not naturally couple significantly. There are however a number of interesting approaches to achieving such coupling of static long-range magnetic and electric orders. I will discuss how magnetism and ferroelectricity can couple, different measurement techniques for detecting this coupling ad the potential consequences for applications. In particular I will discuss compounds that contain both organic ligands and magnetic transition metal ions. The tendency in these soft organic materials for the crystalline lattice to accommodate the magnetism of the magnet ion, and not vice versa creates strong potential for magnetism to create and influence ferroelectricity.
