Soft matter (polymers, colloids, proteins…) self-organizes into complex, hierarchical structures whose mechanics and rheology encompass a broad range of phenomena that pose formidable scientific questions and are central to novel material technologies, old industrial processes, and even natural phenomena. We’ll provide an overview of recent work on the rheology of particulate gels and jammed soft solids, transport through membranes and hierarchically organized layered structures, glass transitions in polymers, and polymer scission under strong flows, with applications to understanding skin, additive manufacturing, plastic recycling, and construction materials.
