Under deformation, amorphous materials respond through a combination of elastic deformation and local events, like particle rearrangements or bond rupture. These events redistribute stress and can promote or prevent further local events. From this point of view, I will analyze two model systems: elastomeric networks under uniaxial deformation using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations; and liquid foams under shear using fast X-ray tomo-rheoscopy. For elastomeric networks, I will show how the network architecture controls stress redistribution and damage localization. For foams, I will study the statistics of three-dimensional bubble rearrangements and their relation to yielding and flow. Together, these studies explore how local events and their interactions shape the macroscopic mechanical response.
