Crickets

Crickets (grillons in French) are hemimetabolous insects that belong to the order Orthoptera, familly Gryllidae.

We use Gryllus bimaculatus, the two-spotted cricket (grillon provençal), which is the main model species. This hemimetabolous insect is easily reared in the laboratory at minimal costs. We study cricket spermatogenesis, which appears superficially similar to Drosophila spermatogenesis, but in an extremely abundant version. G. bimaculatus has a fully annotated, sequenced genome and CRISPR-based genome editing approaches as well as PiggyBac-mediated transgenesis are available for functional genetics.
