Internal waves: importance of resonant topographic scattering in Earth’s Oceans and rotation in Planetary Interiors

The fate of internal waves in density-stratified fluids will be discussed in this talk for two distinct cases: one applicable to Earth’s Oceans, and one applicable to Planetary Interiors. In Earth’s Oceans, internal waves are under scrutiny because they can break and induce mixing, thereby influencing the global oceanic circulation. Here, I will show that a chain-resonance pathway exists for stable internal waves at tidal frequency to become destabilized when they propagate over small-amplitude resonant seabed topography. In the second part of the talk, I will discuss DNS results of convectively-generated internal waves in rotating Boussinesq fluids. Our setup attempts to reproduce features of Planetary Interiors, in which internal waves may have an effect on the magnetic field, and/or potentially drive a mean flow.
