Phosphonic acids increasingly being used in the synthesis of hybrid materials for organic electronic devices, photovoltaic cells, biomaterials, biosensors and corrosion inhibitors. Herein, we report supramolecular and material chemistry of nitrogen-donating ligands bearing phosphonate groups. The design, synthesis, coordination properties and immobilization of these compounds will be presented followed by their applications as sensors and catalysts.
