The progress in biotechnology has made it possible to express proteins or peptides on the cell surface to generate interesting functionalities. The displayed cells can not only be used directly without further extraction and purification, but also improves the stability. In this talk, I will present our recent advances in the microbial surface display for biosensing applications. We expressed xylose dehydrogenase, glucose dehydrogenase and organophosphorus hydrolase on the surface of Escherichia coli as well as glucose oxidase on yeast surface for the construction of whole-cell biocatalysts. Followed by the sensitive and selective electrochemical detecting monosaccharides or organophosphates and assembly of efficient biofuel cells are highlighted. Finally, I will demonstrate our novel strategy in specific fusion protein probes selection from landscape phage display library and its applications in bioanalysis. The microbial cells would be engineered to develop novel approaches, which could be more efficient and cost-effective in comparison with traditional bioanalytical techniques.
