Title : Bridging the gap between signalling and morphogenesis in the Drosophila embryo
Abstract : Morphogenesis is the long-standing topic in field of developmental biology. To date, two important issues of morphogenesis confront researchers : First, within the cells, we do not know the intermediate components that bridge the biological signals and the cytoskeletal effectors that define cell shape. Second, analysing the intricate interactions that occur between different cell types increases dramatically the number of variables to analyse. Such analysis requires a multidisciplinary approach, so that physicists and mathematicians can generate integrated mathematical models to simulate the behaviour of the system. In order to address these two issues, we are using the Drosophila embryo, a powerful genetic model that enables easy live analysis. I will report on our latest advances : First, I describe a putative target of the DPP signalling pathway that interacts with microtubule hence potentially bridges the gap between signalling and cell architecture. Second, I elaborate on our analysis of segmental groove morphogenesis. Biological data and simulations performed by our collaborators show that groove morphogenesis provides a very interesting system to study the interactions between different cell types thus providing a great model to study organogenesis.
