Marcus is an established figure in the histone variant field, whose work has made important contributions to understanding how histone variants connect chromatin organization to cellular metabolism. His work on macroH2A has revealed roles in three-dimensional genome organization and metabolic regulation, raising the possibility that these variants act as metabolic sensors on chromatin. His lab also translates this knowledge into cancer research, exploring chromatin regulators as targets for combination therapies in leukemia.
