In the last decades computer simulations have emerged as a powerful tool to investigate theoretical models of quantum many-body systems. Various numerical approaches have been proposed, each of which characterized by an optimal realm of applicability. For example, Quantum Monte Carlo methods, essentially exact for unfrustrated bosonic models, are not applicable in the presence of frustration. Conversely, variational strategies based on the optimization of a trial wave function remain a viable option. In this framework, the accuracy of the results crucially depends on the particular form of the chosen wave function and the main difficulty resides in the design of an Ansatz capable to capture the relevant physics by means of a reasonable number of variational parameters.

In this talk I will illustrate the properties of the entangled-plaquette wave function which constitutes a fairly general and systematically improvable Ansatz to approximate the ground state of quantum many-body systems on a lattice. Example results, possible developments, and directions of future research will be discussed.
