From bacteria and cells to active colloids or bird flocks, many instances exist of self-propelled entities. Their physics raises a variety of questions ranging from their propulsion mechanisms and properties of individual trajectory to the collective effects resulting from their interactions. I will present three case studies involving such active motion. The first seeks to characterize theoretically the random walks of swimming bacteria. The two others focus on the collective effects seen in two recent experiments: clustering of active colloids and the contact-enhanced locomotion in spreading cell colonies.
