The confinement of thin objects, such as rods, sheets and shells, often generates in them stress, whose relaxation gives rise to complex morphologies – wrinkles, crumples, and folds. The emerging patterns are typically characterized by a multitude of spatial scale, and are governed by a hierarchical energetic structure.
In this talk I will discuss some prototypical examples of this general “geometrically incompatible confinement” problem, such as placing a thin solid sheet onto a rigid ball. The presentation will highlight the nonlinear geometry-mechanics interplay at the core of this problem, the role of effective variational principles, and connections to liquid crystal theory.
