Though criticized, the classic theory proposed by Kolmogorov in 1941 remains the most successful and influential model of turbulence phenomenology. It postulates a cascade of energy from larger to smaller eddies, during which (for high Reynolds numbers and away from boundaries) all directional information at the large scales is lost and the smallest scales are therefore statistically isotropic. We performed particle image velocimetry measurements in a chamber where homogeneous air turbulence is generated with significant levels of large-scale anisotropy. At the achievable Reynolds numbers, we find several results incompatible with Kolmogorov’s theory in scale space, but compatible with the original view of a cascade in physical space proposed by Richardson in 1920.
