Achieving electroneutrality in low-spin iron(II) complexes that respond to chemical reactants
Jinping WANG

Magnetogenic probes may become a precious alternative to off-on probes detectable by other physical readouts (mainly optical) in view of the total absence of a background signal in most biological samples. While two lines of our iron(II)-based low-spin coordination compounds already respond to the chemical reactivity of selected target analytes, their biocompatibility may be much improved by rendering them electroneutral. We report on two new strategies to achieve this without compromising the low-spin character of the initial probes. They require the mastery of the synthetic chemistry of original heterocycles that exhibit pKa’s below the physiological one (pH 7).
