Molecular Design of PEG-based Amphiphilic Molecules for Biological and Biomimetic Applications

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is one of the most popular water-soluble organic compounds, which has been used in wide fields of chemistry. We have interests in development of functional amphiphilic molecules consisting of mono disperse PEGs, and succeed to synthesize macrocyclic structured PEG consisting of three tetraethylene glycol (TEG) and pentaerythritol units, respectively. In addition, we have also developed an alternating amphiphilic multiblock molecule, consisting of linearly connected oligoethylene glycol unit and hydrophobic 1,4-bis(4-phenylethynyl)benzene unit, as a simple structural mimic of multipass transmembrane proteins. Interesting features and possible application of these PEG-based functional molecules will be highlighted.
