Scan Nano Treat : All in one Nanoparticles to Treat Cancer

The current management of tumors relies on a series of steps: diagnosis, treatment, and check-up. These steps are distributed across multiple hospital departments and complicate cancer treatment. The European project Scan Nano Treat, coordinated by Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition, aims to transform this model through “all-in-one” nanoparticles that combine cancer imaging and treatment. At the intersection of chemistry, medical imaging, and innovation, this project opens major perspectives for both medicine and industrial transfer.

The Scan Nano Treat project focuses on developing theranostic nanoparticles that combine cancer imaging and treatment in a single system, using advanced X-ray scanners. Led by Université Lyon 1 and coordinated by Professor Frédéric Lerouge, the project builds on promising results from the previous SCANnTREAT initiative.

Key partners include Lyon Ingénierie Projets (LIP) for project management, LCH and CREATIS labs (Université Lyon 1), Maastricht University, Inelcom (Ireland, for tech transfer and IP), Guerbet (major contrast agent manufacturer), and Philips (scanner technology). The collaboration leverages Lyon’s cutting-edge spectral photon-counting CT scanner (SPCCT), developed by Philippe Douek.

With a €2.5M budget, the project aims to transition from small animal models to larger animals (pigs) within three years, ultimately targeting human clinical applications, starting with pancreatic cancer. The goal is to mature the technology for industrial use, via licensing or start-ups, marking a significant step from lab to market.
