Photonics and plasmonic Nanostructures: from isolated nanoparticles in high fields to butterfly wings

In the first part of this talk, we will present recent advances made at EPN, Quito in the optical and spectroscopical characterization of nanostructures. The problems concern very different scales of our world: 1) the study at the nm level of molecular dissociation processes that occur on the surface of ultra vacuum isolated nanoparticles with ultrashort pulses (fs), and 2) the development of low-cost methods and devices for nano suspension characterization. In the second part, we will present the application of optical techniques to studying biological living beings and some photonic structures in them. For this, we will talk about implementing a Scheimplflug LIDAR to study aerofauna biodiversity in  forests of Ecuador and about efforts to investigate potential relationships between econiches and nanostructures. All applications show the analytical power offered by modern light-based technologies.
