Molecules with Modern Methods and Machinery: New Strategies for Catalysis

The impact of chemistry on society is dependent on the efficiency by which we can access high value chemicals. Over the past half century, chemists have made enormous strides towards minimizing the waste and energy required to synthesize these pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials, and other important molecules. Catalysis has played a critical role in these accomplishments by enabling lower reaction temperatures, reduced reliance on stoichiometric reagents, and enabling streamlined synthetic schemes. To continue this momentum, academics need to embrace new technologies and strategies so that processes can be discovered and optimized more efficiently. In this seminar, two such technologies will be discussed: High throughput experimentation for the discovery of homogeneous catalytic coupling reactions, and continuous flow processing for telescoping multi-step reactions with automated waste recovery and recycling.
