Mechanically interlocked molecules, including rotaxanes and catenanes, offer unique opportunities to control their properties through their topology and controlled dynamic behavior. Indeed, the relative motion of their interlocked subcomponents can deeply influence their photophysical properties, opening new avenues for the development of responsive fluorescent and chiroptical systems. This presentation will explore how molecular design and co-conformational motion can be exploited to modulate fluorescence and circularly polarized luminescence in emissive rotaxanes and catenanes. Together, these studies illustrate how the relationship between molecular architecture, dynamic motion, and excited-state processes provides a versatile strategy for engineering the (chir)optical properties of mechanically interlocked molecules.
