Plasmonic catalysis has emerged as a rapidly evolving field of research that harnesses the unique optoelectronic properties of plasmonic nanomaterials to activate and modulate chemical reactivity. In particular, the generation of highly energetic charge carriers and the confinement of electromagnetic fields at the surface of these objects offer unprecedented control over the efficiency and selectivity of diverse chemical transformations. Despite this remarkable potential, plasmonic catalysis faces several intrinsic limitations that continue to hinder its translation into practical applications. In this seminar we will examine the key challenges of plasmonic catalysis, discuss strategies to mitigate them, and outline emerging directions where this reactivity hold significant promise.
