Flow of athermal disordered media: from microscopic simulations to coarse-grained models

Amorphous materials exhibit strongly heterogeneous dynamics if driven by an external shear:  fast particle rearrangements take place in small region while the rest of the material deforms elastically. These plastic events induce long-range elastic deformation in the system. In athermal system, where stress relaxation due thermal fluctuations can be neglected, plastic deformation is controlled by the accumulation and interaction of elementary events. The first part of the talk is devoted to a simulation study of the effects of structural disorder and inertia on the response of amorphous solids to localized perturbations which mimic the elementary plastic events occurring in deformed glasses. In the second part I will address the topic of mean-field modeling of rheology in athermal amorphous solids, in particular discussing how to model the mechanical noise in the regime of large enough driving rates.
