The search for gravitational waves has been in the spotlight, bot scientific and for the media.  I will give an historical overview of how  this field of experimental research has developed, describing the steps that have brought the community to build and operate  the large Terrestrial interferometers (LIGO and VIRGO), protagonists of this exciting discovery.  I will then discuss the next frontier, i.e.  observation of gravitational waves by a space-borne interferometer, the eLISA project: the challenges, the scientific return, the time line.
