A sizeable, dissipationless current can flow through a one-atom contact between superconductors; strikingly, it proceeds through a single electronic state. I will explain how this prediction derives from a simple mesoscopic description of superconducting weak links. It implies that the supercurrent depends on a new degree of freedom that we reveal and manipulate in our experiments.
