The last 25 years have witnessed a tremendous activity in quantum magnetism, punctuated by a number of experimental breakthroughs and by several new predictions. After a rapid journey through the twentieth century, I will attempt to review some of these recent developments, including the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation and magnetization plateaux in high-field experiments on gapped antiferromagnets, the search for gapped and algebraic quantum spin liquids, the prediction of spin supersolid and spin nematic phases, and the discovery of a quantum magnetic analog of the critical point of water.
