The complex interplay between global ocean circulation and stratification plays a crucial role in regulating the storage of atmospheric heat and carbon in the abyss, significantly influencing Earth's climate. In this review, we highlight recent progress in our comprehension of the key physical mechanisms governing this coupled system. Specifically, we examine the factors controlling the depth and intensity of the overturning cells under steady-state conditions. We further explore the conditions conducive to intrinsic low-frequency variability within this system. Finally, we analyse the transient response of global ocean circulation and stratification to variations in surface atmospheric forcing, such as those induced by global warming.
