Bedload transport by a laminar shearing flow: Experimental investigations and continuum modeling

Sediment transport is a natural phenomenon deeply involved in geo-morphology such as the formation and evolution of systems like channels, fans, and dunes. Recently, two-phase modeling has been developed to describe sediment transport using a continuum description of the granular phase  which follows on from recent developments in dense suspensions and granular flows.

I will present our experiments conducted in a rectangular channel to better understand the physical mechanisms governing sediment transport. We use refractive index-matched particle-fluid combinations to obtain detailed measurements of fluid and granular motion in the laminar regime. We then assess the ability of two-phase modeling to predict our experimental observations and infer the rheology of the sediment. Our study explores various flow configurations, the influence of particle softness, and the transition from viscous to inertial regimes.
