Ambient noise and diffuse waves show similar characteristics: those wavefields show random aspects in time and space, with wave trains propagating almost everywhere in every direction and at all times. In a given medium, even extremely complex, wave propagation is nevertheless deterministic. In the first part, I will review the use of ambient seismic noise to monitor the mechanical properties of natural geomaterials, focusing on pre-failure times. In the second part, I will review the use of diffuse waves to image and monitor mechanical changes associated with damage and crack propagation in man-made materials.
