Title: Sigma models, generalized geometry and non-geometric flux backgrounds

Athanasios Chatzistavrakidis (Division of Theoretical Physics, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia)

Abstract:

Motivated by string backgrounds with non-geometric fluxes and by the geometric underpinnings of string dualities, I will give an overview of recent developments from the viewpoint of sigma models. First, the appearance of the H-twisted standard Courant algebroid through the study of string propagation in singular spacetimes is briefly described. This leads us to consider membrane sigma models whose generalized Wess-Zumino terms are identified with all possible types of fluxes  that can be turned on in the NSNS sector of a string compactification. It is shown that this interrelation holds for double field theory as well, albeit using a relaxed (almost) algebroid structure, thus providing a geometric explanation of its strong constraint. In the last part, we investigate these correspondences for SL(5) exceptional generalized geometry and discuss some open problems.
